Phone In (Vintage Master) won his fifth consecutive race in a tight finish on Saturday (Jun. 4) in the sixth harness racing dash at Hiawatha Horse Park.
The eight-year-old gelding was stranded wide into the first turn but found a spot for Garrett Rooney third just after leader Brightside Melvin (Scott Wray) steamed through the quarter mile station in :27.3. Brightside Melvin opened up six lengths to the half in :55.4, but his advantage dwindled as Phone In rallied first-over going to three-quarters in 1:25.4.
Phone In rolled by the tired leader on the last turn but came under pressure from Santanna Tony (Tyler Borth) who slid out from behind Brightside Melvin. Phone In remained on the outside as Santanna Tony made his bid at the pylons and was in time to hold off that rival to win by a head in 1:57.3.
Smart Thinking (Jonathan Hahn) was two lengths behind in third. The win price was $6.40.
PHONE IN REPLAY
Phone In has now won five races in a row, four of which have been at Hiawatha. George Robinson owns and trains the gelding, who is now 23-for-127 lifetime and has earned $126,209.
Also on the card, Daniel Clements won back-to-back races. The driver piloted regular drive Santa Monica (Steelhead Hanover) to a 1:57.4 victory in the fourth and took Royale Big Guy (Ashlees Big Guy) to the winner’s circle a race later in 1:54.4. Clements is five-for-28 this season, in which he returned to the bike following a five-year hiatus.
The next card at Hiawatha Horse Park is scheduled for Saturday, Jun. 11.
