They call him ‘The Kid’ but Queensland harness racing driver Angus Garrard showed he was more than just that at Redcliffe on Friday.
It was Garrard’s 19th Birthday yesterday and he waited to celebrate in style a day later adding another Group success to his record winning the Chris Garrard’s Patrons Purse with Pet Rock gelding Manila Playboy.
The four-year-old pacer was forced to do it tough too, racing outside the leader for the majority of the Group 3 $31,160 feature.
With the final two quarters clocked in 28 and 27.6 seconds, Manila Playboy held off the peg-running Artillery (Art Major) to win by a half-neck.
Manila Playboy rated 1:57.9 and extended his winning record with Garrard in the sulky to four victories and it was the pacer’s 12th win overall.
MANILA PLAYBOY REPLAY
Trained by Shane Fraser, Manila Playboy gave the horseman a double at the meeting with Betterthancheddar mare Cheesandkisses winning earlier in the night.
The main race of the meeting was the $52,000 Group 2 Garrards Redcliffe Yearling Sales Series Three-Year-Old Final.
Tintin In America gelding Teddy Disco went back-to-back in the feature, blowing his rivals away winning by more than 24m in a rate of 1:56.8 after racing outside the leader.
Trained by Shawn Grimsey and driven by Australia’s current No.2 driver Nathan Dawson, Teddy Disco extended his record to 10 wins and two placings in 16 starts.
TEDDY DISCO REPLAY
It was a strong night of racing for the Redcliffe Harness Racing Club as they prepare to host the $106,070 Group 1 Redcliffe Gold Cup and the $103,990 Garrards Redcliffe Yearling Sales Series Final next Saturday (June 25).
