UPDATED: A Clearcreek Township police officer in Warren County, Ohio was shot in the head while responding to a domestic disturbance Tuesday night (July 12).
The incident occurred at a residence located in the 5000-block of Ohio 48 at approximately 9 p.m. on July 12, Clearcreek Township Police Department (CTPD) Chief John Terrill told reporters later in the night.
Apparently, officers were familiar with the suspect, 65-year-old Mark Evers, and that they had responded to the home for multiple other domestic violence calls in the past.
On this particular night, Evers was allegedly ramming an ATV into his wifeās vehicle.
When approached by police officers and asked to turn off the ignition to his ATV, Evers pulled out a gun, got out of the ATV and shot one of the police officers. The wounded officerās female partner returned fire, and Evers fell to the ground dead, according to the chief.
Chief John Terrill, at a press conference today (July 14), told reports that the early report was that Evers died from a contact wound to the head. This could well mean that Evers shot at the police office and then immediately took his own life.
Evers, a harness racing trainer-driver, conditioned the 2021 Dan Patch Two-Year-Old Pacer of the Year, Monte Miki, winner of the Metro Pace and the Breeders Crown.
According to the United States Trotting Association, Evers had 830 wins as a harness racing driver and 452 wins as a trainer.
A medical helicopter flew the wounded 14-year police veteran to Miami Valley Hospital in Dayton, where he remained in stable condition in the intensive care unit on Thursday, according to news reports.
