Wheres The Gold takes Telfers to the lead

Team Telfer now has the overall lead in the harness racing trainers’ premiership, after winning at Cambridge last night (Jul. 21).

Wheres The Gold (Somebeachsomewhere) won for Ben Butcher, one of two wins for the night, with brother Zachary bagging a treble, and father David Butcher also saluting the judge.

The new racing year is well and truly past the halfway point (Jan 1 – Dec 31), as opposed to the traditional season that ran from August 1 – July 31.

For the brother and sister training combo of Steve and Amanda Telfer the victory took them to 52 wins for the year, just one ahead of Mark Purdon and Hayden Cullen. The All Stars have a hugely superior UDR (.4317) and have easily won the most stakes ($2,103,024). The Telfers’ total stakes stands at $740,889 with a UDR of .3200.

Both the Telfers and the All Stars have been going through a bit of a drought of late. It was the Telfers’ first win since Mimi E Coco nearly two months ago (May 27) while the All Stars’ last win was with First Class on June 24, though the stable routinely scales down during the winter months.

The Telfers have two runners in tonight at Addington, with Alta Debonair (Art Major) (R7 – 7.28pm) and Obsession (Captaintreacherous) (R10 – 8.54pm).

The champion trainer for the past two seasons Robert Dunn (who now trains with daughter-in-law Jenna Dunn) is third equal on 43 wins, along with Michael House.

The drivers’ premiership is much more straight forward, with Blair Orange all but assured of securing his fifth premiership in a row. He’s on 109 wins for the year, 50 clear of closest rival John Dunn.
