Harness racing driver Nathan Sobey had a perfect night heading into the final two races at The Track On 2 on Wednesday (Aug. 18) before being stymied in the fifth.
Custards Dungeon (Custard The Dragon) cruised to a four-length score in the opener for Sobey. The reinsman put him up front from third in the second panel, and the six-year-old stallion won going away by four lengths for trainer Robert Parish and owner Chris Mckenzie.
Sobey orchestrated a last-to-first rally in the final eighth of a mile with Cenalta Flash (Allamerican Merlin) in the second race. The sophomore filly suddenly exploded from last after gapping cover in the middle half and roared by all five horses in front of her in the stretch for the victory in 1:59.4. Gordon Empey trains the filly and co-owns her with Helen Empey and Myrna Empey.
Instant Wynnās (Santanna Blue Chip) name applied to her third race win ā she was on top instantly and jogged under little urging from Sobey in 2:00.3. It was the first of two photos on the day for trainer Kelly Crump, who co-owns the three-year-old filly with Kyle Crump and Mark Laycock.
Crumpās other winner was Crazybeautifultome (Toucam Sam), whom Sobey moved first-up from third at three-quarters and guided her to victory with sparing encouragement in 1:59.2. Kelly and Kyle Crump also co-own this filly.
Mike Hennessy broke up Sobeyās chance at a sweep in the fifth and doubled with a win in the finale.
The Track On 2 resumes racing on Saturday, Aug. 20.
