SRF needs help saving 60+ horses

Cream Ridge, NJ — 8/25/2022 — In the recent months the Standardbred Retirement Foundation, (SRF) and its volunteers have managed to get help to the harness racing horses it knew of at risk for slaughter. Now it needs help as the challenges are stacking the odds in the wrong way.

Make On, one horse in a pen

Among these challenges, the pens are full and the owners have lost their patience. SRF’s ability to raise funds on social media has also been inadvertently terminated by Face Book and Instagram for six days already with little hope of it being corrected anytime soon.  Most in this group are in appalling condition; emaciated; lame; crippled; sick; have large open wounds; eye injuries; and body welts. These is why SRF must reach out to everyone for emergency aid. Their deadline is Thursday, September 1.

There are more than sixty in dire need of help. Among them, at a quick glance are:  a mare that appears to be in foal, she is a $190,000 winner; another had $130,000 on his card;  and another earned $160,000. A few owners and breeders have helped with donations toward a horse from their past. What really hits SRF is the care needed until a home is found. Winter is coming, SRF is full and it may take many, many months to accomplish this.

These horses need homes and tax-deductible donations to give them a chance to be spared the horrors of slaughter. A few were in such horrific condition that SRF already removed from the pen to avoid losing their lives there, or on the truck to the Canadian and Mexican slaughter plant. As of today, whether the pens are providing basic needs, water, or hay is questionable.

The facilities SRF uses are all full to capacity, adding to this challenge. All but one of the horses listed need homes or fosters, nearly all need donations.

SRF asks to also share this information with friends, and on social media.

To offer a home or foster home email srfhorsesankids@gmail.com An application is required and will be handled expeditiously. This can be found on the website. Updates will be on the Standardbred Retirement Foundation SOSS/Face Book as well.

Please donate either at https://www.adoptahorse.org/emergency-horses-need-help or by telephoning 609-738-3255.

Helping horses in these situations include the efforts of many people, collecting current information is challenging. If you have contributed it may take a bit of time to update the information.
