Southwind Java (Captaintreacherous) proved to be too tough on the front end in capturing the $56,000 harness racing final of the New Jersey Sire Stakes Standardbred Development Fund at Freehold Raceway Saturday (Sept. 10).
The final was for three-year-old pacing fillies and took place in the 4th race.
After the start of the race, Southwind Java and driver Austin Siegelman were able to take the lead away from Shabby Chic (Jim Marohn, Jr) at the opening quarter mile in :27.2. Shabby Chic was then content to sit the pocket trip.
Southwind Java then cut the mile to the half in :56.1 before Counterparty Risk (Vincent Ginsburg) came first-over to challenge but never made it closer than third place on the outside as Southwind Java led past the three-quarters in 1:24.4.
As they came down the stretch it became a two-horse race to the wire between Southwind Java and Shabby Chic with Southwind Java just holding on at the wire to win by a head in 1:53.3. Two Proud (Pat Lachance) closed to be third.
