Shanghai Ky (Shanghai Phil) pocket-popped to the front and held off division leader Docsphillycheese to win the sole Prospect Series dash for three-year-old pacing colts at Hiawatha Horse Park on Saturday (Sep. 10).
Maskedman (Rene Dion) grabbed the early lead, leaving Shanghai Ky in the pocket from post one in a :28.2 opening panel. Lorne House activated the latter after the half-mile time of :58 flashed, and the gelding circled to the front.
Docsphillycheese (Garrett Rooney) gained steadily to three-quarters in 1:26 and began to out-pace the leader in the stretch, but Shanghai Ky was home in time to score by a neck in 1:55.3.
Maskedman also closed but was half of a length back in third.
Scott McNiven trains Shanghai Ky for owner/breeders Kimberly McNiven of Putnam and Donald Douglas of Ingersoll. The gelding’s win was his third in 23 lifetime appearances. He has now earned $17,090.
The Prospect Series final for three-year-old pacing colts is up next on Friday, Sep. 30 at The Raceway at Western Fair District.
Hiawatha Horse Park has two cards remaining this season. The next is set for Saturday, Sep. 17.
