King Of The North (Walner) ascended to the throne of three-year-old colt trotters as he blew away his harness racing rivals in the division’s $810,000 Breeders Crown event, also claiming the stakes and Canadian records at Woodbine Mohawk Park on Saturday (Oct. 29).
The colt provided plentiful speed at the start for Mark MacDonald to overcome Woodbine Mohawk Park’s pylon post and take command while blitzing to the quarter in :26.2. He managed a :54.3 half before taking off to three-quarters in 1:22.1, opening up a several-length advantage.
He headed for home with a sizeable margin and motored even more when MacDonald kicked out the plugs. The colt thundered home a four-length winner, prompting a triumphant fist pump from MacDonald at the line as the pair stopped the clock in 1:50.3.
Double Deceiver (Dave Miller) passed foes late on the grandstand side to claim the place position. Slay finished third.
King Of The North’s win made him the fastest trotting male in Canadian history. He was a fifth of a second short of Atlanta’s all-sex record. He also sliced a chunk off Creatine’s previous Breeders Crown division record of 1:51.2.
KING OF THE NORTH REPLAY
It was just King Of The North’s second win of the season – his other coming in last week’s elimination. He has won eight of his 23 starts for the ownership group of Schnittker Ward of Middletown, Arden Homestead Stable of Delhi, Nolamura Racing of Goshen, and Steven Arnold of Purchase. Ray Schnittker trains the colt, who passed a million dollars in earnings with the win; his bankroll now totals $1,234,555.
