Refined (Uncle Peter) and harness racing driver Brent Holland were able to hold off the pocket-sitting Grey (Matt Kakaley) in capturing the $33,000 Fillies and Mares Open Handicap Trot Thursday (Dec. 8) at Yonkers Raceway.
The 8th race feature saw Grey and Kakaley scoot to the lead off the gate and held off race favorite Refined until the first quarter mile in :27.4.
With field in pretty much single file order, Refined led to the half mile in :57.1. Then Plumb (Yannick Gingras) came first-over with Lady Jeter (Braxten Boyd) second-over and Plumb was second on the outside of Refined at the three-quarter mile marker in 1:26.4.
Plumb was unable to keep up by the top of the stretch and then Grey started to come after Refined and kept gaining ground, but the finish belonged to Refined by a head over Plumb in 1:56. Queen Of All (Austin Siegelman) was third.
REFINED REPLAY
It was the tenth win of the year for Refined. The six-year-old mare is trained by Virgil Morgan, Jr. for owners Joyce McClelland and Larry Wills. She paid $4.80 to win.
