Netherton Franco extends Ferguson’s outstanding season

Young harness racing trainer Craig Ferguson is fast becoming known for his ability to turn a horse’s fortunes around.

Netherton Franco’s (Always B Miki) win at Winton on Saturday (Dec. 24) is a case in point.

The three year old filly had ten unsuccessful starts for Ryal Bush trainer Hamish Hunter.

“The owners thought she might need a change of scenery. Robin Braithwaite who owns the horse is a brother-in-law to Nigel Ferguson who gives us a hand at the stables so that’s how he came to my place,” Ferguson said.

Ferguson is fortunate to have a swimming pool at his disposal and this addition to the horse’s routine obviously has benefits.

“We’ve got the grass track to jog around too. I think she enjoys getting out and cantering on the grass. She had two workouts and went well in both of them.”

From barrier three Ferguson took Netherton Franco straight to the lead.

“She was a wee bit dreamy. She’s not a natural leader at this stage but she was a $1.60 favourite, so you’ve got to give the punters a chance.”

Although The Matriarch (Captaintreacherous) got within a half a length of Netherton Franco turning in, Ferguson’s filly responded well.

“When I did ask her to sprint up she hit the line nice.”

The winning margin was two and three quarter lengths with the mile run in 1-56.8.

NETHERTON FRANCO REPLAY

It’s been a great season for the Wyndham trainer who has an outstanding UDR rating. It was his second winner in four days with Yorokobi (Bettor’s Delight) winning at Ashburton on Thursday (Dec. 22).

“I was super happy with him. It was a good run to come from where he did and on the time they went. On his day he’s a really nice horse but he doesn’t always put it together.”
