Rising Southern Harness Racing star Captain Tom (Captaintreacherous) stepped up another level when he beat a small but select field at Ascot Park today (Jan. 19) in the $15,000 Alabar Southern Supremacy Stakes over 2200 metres.
Driver Brad Williamson took the three year old straight to the front. The gelding ran his last 800 metres in 55.7 and last 400 in 27 seconds, giving his rivals no chance of beating him.
Second favourite With Style (Bettorās Delight) got within a length and a quarter to run second.
āHeās still got a lot to learn. He left the gate well and paced perfect which are all positives because to be fair he didnāt pace that well at Omakau. I might have had his hopples too long and Omakau can be a bit shifty,ā said trainer Alister Black.
The horse will now target the Group Two $50,000 Alabar Classic on 3rd March before running in the Group One $100,000 Northern Derby on 24th March. Black said heāll head to Auckland two weeks before the Alabar Classic.Ā
āWeāve been trying to get a good one for a while but hey, thereās going to be a lot of good horses heading to Auckland but I think he deserves to go there.ā
