Cheddar Bay (Betterthancheddar) hung on after battling through the middle two panels of the Preferred Pace at The Raceway at the Western Fair District on Friday (Jan. 27) for his first harness racing win of the year.
Bradley Harris hustled the gelding out from post seven and had him on top midway through the first turn. The quarter came in :27.4, and G A Speed Sammy (Brett MacDonald) put him under pressure as they neared the half in :58.1.
The pair went stride-for-stride up to three-quarters in 1:26.3, and Cheddar Bay pulled away on the homeward turn. The rest of the field closed in, but the seven-year-old dug in to cross the line first by a half-length in 1:56.4.
Carsons Shadow (Garrett Rooney) was fastest of the rest, finishing second. Crosscut (Anthony Haughan) closed for show.
