Sweet Western (Western Ideal) sat in fourth pretty much the entire harness racing contest at Miami Valley Raceway Tuesday (Feb. 28) until the top of the stretch and that was when the 25-1 longshot kicked into high gear.
The 6th race $16,000 Fillies and Mares Pace got underway with Foxy Fiji (Dan Noble) scooting to the early lead from the rail with race favorite Stay Gold (Brett Miller) sitting the two-hole trip to the first quarter in :27.1.
Foxy Fiji continued to lead the way to the half mile in :55.2 and three-quarters in 1:23 with no movement from the back of the pack. At least until the final turn.
Thatās when Stay Gold with Miller pulled the pocket seat and came after Foxy Fiji and as those two battled to the wire, coming on the outside was Sweet Western with driver Cameron McCown, from fourth place along with Tell The Dream (Tyler Smith) getting into the fray.
Now they were nearly four across as they came to the finish with Sweet Western getting up by a head in 1:52.4 over Stay Gold with Foxy Fiji third and Tell The Dream fourth.
SWEET WESTERN REPLAY
It was the second straight win in five starts on the year for Sweet Western. The seven-year-old mare is trained by Randy Smith for owner Jessica Smith. She paid $52.40 to win.
