The Ron Waples-trained Century Isaiah (Muscle Mass) reached the winner’s circle for the first time in 34 starts on Thursday (Mar. 16) with an upset harness racing victory at Woodbine Mohawk Park.
The gelding glided to an early lead in line to James MacDonald, hitting the quarter in :28.3. He got off light for much of the middle half despite 13-1 odds; he faced no pressure to the half in :58.3 and only saw a challenge from Belvedere Bronx (Dagfin Henriksen) when approaching three-quarters in 1:26.2.
Century Isaiah dispatched Belvedere Bronx quickly before seeing Bar Brawl (Louis-Philippe Roy) to his inside. The leader thwarted that challenge with cool confidence from MacDonald and got home in 1:55.2.
He was half a length the best over Bar Brawl. Busy Making Moni (Bob McClure) got up for third over Belvedere Bronx.
CENTURY ISAIAH REPLAY
It was Century Isaiah’s first lifetime win, with 33 starts separating it from his first. He broke his maiden on Aug. 10, 2021 after finishing third in an Ontario Sires Stakes contest. The gelding has earned $54,322 in 38 outings. Waples co-owns the four-year-old with Dr. Sheila Atmore.
Racing continues on Friday, Mar. 17 at Woodbine Mohawk Park with an 11-race card featuring a Fillies and Mares Preferred 2.
