Hiawatha Horse Park began its 2023 harness racing season on Saturday (May 6) with 10 dashes.
Andy Moore and Rose Ricky (All Bets Off) circled the field in the first race. The three-year-old filly started seventh but was on top by three-quarters and fought her way to victory in 1:59.3. Dollywood (Nick Boyd) got up for second with Daddys Little Star (Daniel Clements) third.
Dan Clements got his meet off right with an opening day triple. The reinsman, who successfully left driving retirement last year, won with Auggie (Betterthacheddar, 1:59) in the second, Southern Memories (Roll With Joe, 1:56.4) in the third, and Show Me The Magic (Donato Hanover, 1:59.2.) with a late-charging thriller in the eighth.
Hiawatha Horse Park will race Saturdays only this season, ending on September 23. First post each week is 6:30 p.m. EDT. The track is set to host the Ontario Sires Stakes Grassroots on Jul. 22 and Sep. 2.
The next card at the track is on Saturday, May 13.
