American History (American Ideal) paced the fastest mile so far this Canadian harness racing season as he won the $35,000 Preferred-2 for the first time this year at Woodbine Mohawk Park on Saturday (May 13).

Trevor Henry sent him to the top, then allowed Momas Son Byrne (Jonathan Drury) to take over at the quarter in :26.1. American History tracked him from the pocket through :53.3 and 1:21 middle panels.

Momas Son Byrne held the challenger at bay into the final eighth, but a late surge from American History at the cones got him up to take the national seasonal record of 1:48.2.

Momas Son Byrne was second by a half-length. Century Heineken (Doug McNair) closed for third.

AMERICAN HISTORY REPLAY

American History has now earned $1,633,945 in 124 starts. His 38th career win on Saturday was his first in a Preferred-level contest this season from 13 attempts. Richard Moreau conditions the eight-year-old stallion for Brad Grant of Milton.

Dabarndawgswatchin (Hes Watching) went back-to-back in the Fillies and Mares Preferred-2 laster on the card with a two-length win. Coming off a career-best effort and her first win of the season in 1:49.3, she paced her mile in 1:50 this time. She beat Gias Surreal, who came to Ontario at the start of May in preparation for the Forest City Pace.

DABARNDAWGSWATCHIN REPLAY

Dabarndawgswatchin, a Dave Menary-trained five-year-old, is now less than $50 in earnings away from the half-million mark. The sole beneficiaries of that total are owner/breeders Julie Ferguson and Lloyd Stone.

Woodbine Mohawk Park will host a $48,000 Free For All Trot in its next scheduled card on Monday, May 15.
