Cool Ma Belle (Walner, Bob McClure), half-sister to Hambletonian winner Cool Papa Bell, overcame post 10 with a two-move harness racing effort to take the first division of leg one of the Pure Ivory series at Woodbine Mohawk Park on Thursday (Jul. 20).
The filly thundered out early to take the lead at the quarter, gave it up entering the far turn, and surged late to prevail by a half-length in 1:58.3. She beat Vanjie Blue Chip (Doug McNair) by half a length, who was the same margin clear of Winning Alliance (Jody Jamieson).
COOL MA BELLE REPLAY
Cool Ma Belle, a $275,000 Harrisburg purchase, is out of Blk Thai Optional, who combined with Chapter Seven to produce Cool Papa Bell. Shawn Steacy trains the filly for Hudson Standardbred Stable of Hudson, Nancy Malik of Ottawa, and Landmark 16 Racing Stable of Lansdowne.
Cold Snaps (Six Pack) put on a power display in the second division of the series for two-year-old trotting fillies with Trevor Henry at the lines. The filly raced out to a three-length lead at the quarter and was five up at three-quarters. Punch The Clock (James MacDonald) cut down the margin late and finished in :27.4 but was three-quarters-of-a-length adrift. Southern Moni (Sylvain Filion) was third.
COLD SNAPS REPLAY
Cold Snaps is now two-for-four with $19,280 in earnings. Blake Macintosh trains the filly and co-owns her with Tim Klemencic of Trenton. She is out of the Kadabra mare Winter Sweet Frost, an Ontario Sires Stakes champion.
Greenshoe offspring swept the first leg of the Millard Farms for freshman trotting males.
Struttin Yankee (Filion) flashed speed in the first division. He headed the field through :30.1, 1:01.1, and 1:31.3 panels before dashing home to win by two lengths. Gone Goodbye (Scott Young) proved second-best. Private Access (Louis-Philippe Roy) was promoted to third after Wishing Spell (Ondrej Gois) was disqualified for an extended break.
STRUTTIN YANKEE REPLAY
It was the first win for Struttin Yankee, who raced twice at Vernon Downs before owner/trainer Todd Lapage took him to Ontario for the series. The gelding was a $17,000 Lexington Select sale purchase. He’s the third foal from Soprana Hill and the first pari-mutuel winner.
Send It In Hanover (Filion) stole the show in the second division, soaring past Top Mast (James MacDonald) down the lane to score in 1:58. The latter was a length-and-a-half beaten in second. Flight Landing (Tyler Jones) was third-best.
SEND IT IN HANOVER REPLAY
Send It In Hanover is now two-for-two lifetime. He won his debut by open lengths for trainer Benoit Baillargeon. He is a partner on the gelding with Frank Cirillo of Kleinburg, Santo Vena of Cedar Valley, and Nunzio Vena of Bolton. The gelding, out of the Muscle Hill Mare Southwind Percy, is a half-brother to Sadie Hanover, who won the Zweig Memorial earlier this month.
The second legs of the Millard Farms and Pure Ivory series are set for Aug. 3 at Woodbine Mohawk Park.
