Kelly Hoerdt’s In High Cotton (Somebeachsomewhere) captured the Fillies and Mares Preferred to complete a four-win day on Saturday (Jul. 29) at Century Downs for the harness racing trainer.
In High Cotton, driven by Phil Giesbrecht controlled the race from the top. The mare traveled through the first three stations in :27.1, :55.3, and 1:23.1 with little threat coming from the first-up Outlaw Sharktastic (Nathan Sobey). In High Cotton took a two-and-a-half turning for home and resisted the late burst of Grey Sea (Michael Hennessy) to take the top pace in 1:52.4. The latter was second best. Century Mach (Hoerdt) rallied for show.
IN HIGH COTTON REPLAY
In High Cotton has now won three in a row and 18 of 78 lifetime. The mare has earned $192,017 and was second in the Penny Bath Memorial last year. Hoerdt co-owns the five-year-old with Blair and Erna Corbeil of Leduc.
Hoerdt’s other winning trainees were Beach Myst (Mystician, Hoerdt, 1:59), Chuck You Farlie (Custard The Dragon, Hoerdt, 1:54.3), and Chocolate Terror (Stonebridge Terror, Henessy, 1:56).
Century Downs also hosted Packwood Grand during the race card, a “celebration of old-world leisure and sophistication,” bringing some sterling fashion to the track. The handle on the day totaled $76,400.
Century Downs enters its final month of racing with its next card on Friday, Aug. 4. There will be five race dates until closing day on Aug. 16.
