Dabarndawgswatchin finally gets it done

After four straight place finishes, Dabarndawgswatchin (Hes Watching) beat Woodbine Mohawk Park’s best harness racing distaffers in the $32,000 Fillies and Mares Preferred on Friday (Aug. 11).

The racy mare dropped into the fifth spot on the rail after entering the first turn parked out and held position through the quarter in :26.2 and to the half in :54.2. Louis-Philippe Roy sent the mare back into motion first-up as they headed to the final turn and had her making headway to three-quarters in 1:22.3.

She applied the blowtorch to reigning Older Pacing Mare of the Year So Much More (Jody Jamieson) coming down the lane and put her away in deep-stretch. Style For A Mile (Sylvain Filion) made her voice heard late, but Dabarndawgswatchin made it home a length to the good in 1:49.4.

Style For A Mile took second. Western Wish (Tyler Borth) also passed rivals late for place.

DABARNDAWGSWATCHIN REPLAY

Dabarndawgswatchin ended an eight-race losing streak and a run of four straight place finishes with the win. The Dave Menary-trained mare is now three-for-16 this year. Owned by her breeders, Julie Ferguson of Greely and Lloyd Stone of Portland (ON), Dabarndawgswatchin has won 18 of her 78 career outings and has amassed $561,454 in earnings.

Also on the card, Chain Gang (Bettors Delight, Trevor Henry), winner of the first Ontario Sires Stakes Gold leg for freshman pacing colts, made a winning return. He took the lead prior to the half and was never headed again, winning by a half-length in 1:52.1. The colt had been away since his debut on Jul. 10 when he won the Gold by a neck. Nick Galluci trains him for Millar Farms of Stouffville.

CHAIN GANG REPLAY

In race three, $235,000 Lexington Select purchase Captains Quarters (Captaintreacherous, Jamieson) won his debut. The colt exploded down the stretch off a second-over trip to a three-length victory. He is the first foal from stakes winner Prescient Beauty, an earner of $495,860. Rich Stiles of Chelsea owns the colt and appointed Herbert Holland as the trainer.

CAPTAINS QUARTERS

Woodbine Mohawk Park will wrap up its raceweek with a 12-race program featuring the finals of the Whenuwishuponastar and Dream Maker. The card, starting at 7:00 p.m. EDT, will include three divisions of the third Ontario Sires Stakes Grassroots leg for three-year-old colts and geldings and a $48,000 Free For All.
