An interesting format was the Premio Campionato Europeo over the 800-meter track at Cesana. The field raced two heats over 1660 meters autostart for purses of 11,000ā¬ with the heat winners competing in a race off for the purse of 132,000ā¬ over the same 1660-meter distance.
The final race off went to Akela Pal Ferm (7f Maharajah-Remilla di Palle-SJs Photo) timed in 1.13.3kr with a gate to wire performance directed by driver Antonio DiNardo for trainer Gennaro Casillo. This mare won heat two while Bonneville Gifont (6f Varenne-Fedora Caf-Toss Out) took the first heat.
As stated, Akela Pal Ferm took heat two at 2.9/1 odds defeating 9.6/1 Achille BLV (7m Ganymede-Isadora dei Fioni-Varenne) handled by Enrico Bellei with third to 2.6/1 Vernissage Grif (9m Varenne-Dalia Grif-Park Avenue Joe) for Alessandro Gocciadoro. 32.9/1 Verdon WG (9m Raja Miirchi-Inghilterra OM-Lemon Dra) was fourth ahead of 3.8/1 Zacon Gio (8m Ruty Grif-May Glade Font SM-Yankee Glide) reined by V.P. DellāAnnunziata, this one a former Yonkers International Trot winner. This heat was timed in 1.10.8kr.
In heat one the 7.4/1 Bonnevillle Gifont (6f Varenne-Fedore Caf-Toss Out) scored in 1.11.9kr and teamed with Antonio Simoli. Vesna (9f Libeccio Grif-Immogines Lunare-Toss Out) was second at 14/1 for Fed Exposito with 33.2/1 Zola Key (7g Zola Boko-Jennie J- Super Arnie) finishing third ahead of 10.4/1 Zacon Gio and 40.6/1 Akela Pal Ferm, the eventual race winner. Vernissage Grif was ninth in this heat.
