CIRCLEVILLE, OH. – The Ohio Selected Jug Yearling Sale is this Friday (Sept. 15) at the Pickaway Ag Center, Circleville, Ohio, which means that the focus of many of the Buckeye state’s Standardbred owners and trainers has turned to a search for the next champion harness racing horse.
There are 277 yearlings cataloged, and the auction will get underway at 10 am on September 15 with a special Show Day on Thursday (Sept. 14). As always, the sales company and breeders will provide complimentary food and refreshments from 4 pm to 6 pm on Thursday, while prospective purchasers peruse the expansive offerings.
With the Ohio Super Night behind us, it’s easy to see why astute buyers check the Ohio Selected Jug Sale catalog first. While only five of the eight divisional winners were sold at public auction, three of this season’s Ohio Sire Stakes ‘Scarlet’ champions were picked out and brought home by their connections at this sale.
Two-time Ohio Sire Stakes champion ROSE RUN YOLANDA (Triumphant Caviar) 3,1:53f-’23; BT1:51.3-’23 ($640,864) has been a model of consistency for her Luther brothers connections, having been purchased for $50,000 at the 2021 sale from the Rose Run Farm consignment. That same nursery will offer Hip # 144, which is a full brother to that trotting filly.
TENNESSEE TOM (Long Tom) 2,1:55.1f-’23 ($289,850), is another success story, having won his $300,000 final for trainer Ron Burke. The leading conditioner selected him from this sale one year ago, paying just $26,000 for the six-figure earner. Dublin Valley Farm, Agent, will offer Hip # 210, who is a Full Count half-brother to the 2-year-old Super Night champion.
CLEVER CODY p,2,1:51f-’23 ($291,050) also calls the Ohio Selected Jug sale his alma mater, having been purchased by Dr. Ian Moore, et al, for $24,000 at last year’s event. He was consigned and sold by Marvin Raber Farm.
All the best Ohio-based stallions are represented at the sale, including (7 or more): Bit Of A Legend N (10), Catch The Fire (22), Dancin Yankee (8), Downbytheseaside (32), Enterprise (20), Fear The Dragon (21), Full Count (9), Lather Up (8), Long Tom (33), Marseille (17), Racing Hill (9), Uncle Peter (23), Volstead (7) and What The Hill (38).
