After a strong showing in the $250,000 Jim Ewart Memorial last week where he finished fourth against the best older pacers in harness racing, Chase H Hanover (Captaintreacherous) beat up on a field of six rivals in winning the $27,000 Open Handicap Pace at Scioto Downs Saturday (Sept. 16).
With driver Tony Hall in the sulky, Chase H Hanover left sharply from post seven to kick off the 8th race feature and led the field to the opening quarter mile in a brisk :26 seconds.
Then Bernie (Sam Widger) came charging up first-over from fifth place to pressure Chase H Hanover to the half mile in :54.1. Bernie was not able to collar Chase H Hanover as he cut the mile to the three-quarters in 1:20.4.
Coming around the final turn, Chase H Hanover kicked in another gear and was leading by three lengths at the top of the stretch and held that margin right to the wire in 1:48.2. Bernie held on for second with Later Dudes (Chris Page) third.
CHASE H HANOVER REPLAY
It was the seventh win of the year for Chase H Hanover. The five-year-old gelding is trained by Virgil Morgan, Jr. for Bottom Line Racing and Carl Howard, paying $3.80 to win as the wagering favorite.
