Once again Dreams Are Free (Captaintreacherous) underlined his star qualities as he put up a herculean performance to win at the Winton Harness Racing Club’s meeting today.
The two year old missed the start by a conservative thirty lengths.
“He was a little bit keyed up going up to the gate and had a buck because he was feeling well. Uncharacteristically he went off stride. The incident in Invercargill (when he was squeezed and locked wheels) may have been playing on his mind. Hopefully not and I’m hoping it won’t be a long term problem for him,” Williamson said.
He was still thirteen lengths from the leader with a lap to run and didn’t latch onto the tail of the field until the last 450 metres of the race.
“I contemplated a couple of times about just easing him out because I thought it was going to be too much. I gave him a wee click up at the 600 and he quickened for me like a good horse.”
Williamson brought him down the outside and he got up to beat Gotta Elect Bill (Auckland Reactor) by half a neck.
DREAMS ARE FREE REPLAY
The gelding was timed to run his 2400 metres post to post in 2-53.38 and his last mile in 1-54.6.
“It was a fairly hard run on him today. It wasn’t an ideal leadup run to the Grand Prix in three weeks. We found out he’s got a phenomenal engine, huge ability and a great will to win but the frustrating part is that he needed to win today to get in the top twelve. I contemplated a couple of time to just ease him out. We’ll freshen him and hopefully the run hasn’t taken too much out of him.”
Dreams Are Free is owned by Brendon Fahy and The Dreams Are Free Syndicate.
“Brendon has been magnificent. He said the whole way through that the horse will tell you what to do next. Initially the horse was telling me to take baby steps but now he’s telling me that he’s thriving on racing.”
The win places Dreams Are Free in the top thirteen in the G1 $110,000 Ace Of Spades on the million dollar Grand Prix Day at Addington on December 10th.
“He won’t race until then. Look, if he gets eliminated so be it. He’ll travel up a week out and I’ll probably take him into Addington for a run just like I did before he raced at Winton. Everything he’s done has exceeded my expectations. I think so much of the horse that unless he’s not 110% we won’t be in the Grand Prix.”
