Lindsay and Mary Vagg, the faces behind the Victree Standardbreds banner, are one of the many success stories of the Australian Pacing Gold sales-race series in Brisbane.

The couple, who live on a 530 acre property at Southbrook on the Darling Downs, have already produced two winners of the Group 1 Brisbane APG Sales Graduate Final in My Ultimate Levi (2021) and Pinup Boy (2017).

And, another of their breed, I Am Sam, finished a close third in the $300,000 APG Final at Moonee Valley in 2005. He went on to win a hefty $531,702, numbering the APG 3YO Final at Harold Park in 2005 among his five Group successes.

“We started breeding in the early 2000’s as a hobby,” Lindsay said. “We bought two Fake Left mares in Just Del and Ilove Rosie.

“We joined both of them and we got a filly and a colt as our first foals. We took both to the APG sale but one failed to sell, so we took him home and we raced him ourselves. It was I Am Sam.

“I Am Sam really got us going and we’ve been selling yearlings at the APG sales ever since. We normally sell everything that we breed.”

Incidentally, Ilove Rosie became the dam of six winners including the Group 3 winner Victree Bonita, the dam of My Ultimate Levi.

Victree Standardbreds will present a powerful four-strong draft at the Australian Pacing Gold sale at Magic Millions, Gold Coast on Sunday, January 28.

It includes a well conformed McWicked colt (Lot 2), a half-brother to Pinup Boy and a close relative of I Am Sam and the Seymour Nursery winner Montana Marie.

“He’s a black colt with a white blaze and four white feet,” Lindsay stated.

Three fillies from the Victree Standardbreds’ consignment represent the dominant Somebeachsomewhere sireline and the leading maternal families in Australasia.

Lot 33, a daughter of the exciting, young American horse Stay Hungry, belongs to the family of the top flight NZ racemares Amazing Dream, Western Dream, Dream Royale and Dreamy Atom.

“She’s a lovely filly. A typical Stay Hungry,” Lindsay said.

Lot 38, a Downbytheseaside bay filly from the Art Major mare Im Sugar Coated (1:57.5), is a member of the same tribe as Australia’s first millionairess Tailamade Lombo, Espeshlimade Lombo and Aussie Made Lombo.

“She’s a tall filly whose well put together like a lot of the Downbytheseaside’s,” he said.

The fourth offering from their draft is Lot 41, a strongly built, long-bodied filly by the former 3YO Colt of the Year and Chariots of Fire winner Poster Boy from the four-time Albion Park winner Jive NZ (1:54.1), a granddaughter of the triple Oaks winner Under Cover Lover.
