There are only three Lazarus colts in the APG Melbourne Yearling Sale on February 4 and Travis Jude will offer two of them.
The mighty Lazarus had few equals on the track, winning 37 races and $4.1 million in stakes. His harness racing success has continued in the breeding barn with 15 two-year-old winners in Australia from his first crop last season.
His top earners were Group 1 winner Nathan Street (1.50.5, $138K) and Group 1 runner-up Grevis (1.55.3, $95K).
His top earner in the US was outstanding colt Voukelalas (1.49.4, $570K) and Bluegrass winner Handlelikeaporsche (1.50.2, $269K).
Jude was a big fan of the superstar NZ pacer when he raced and had no hesitation selecting him as a sire for his two well credentialled broodmares Grace Anatomy and Little Fib.
“I wish I could have got his semen here again this year,” Jude said.
His first colt (Lot 140) is out of Grace Anatomy, who has produced four $100,000 earners from her seven winners – Sutter Man (1.56.7, $170K), La Saffron (1.56.8, $142K), Our Amazing Grace (1.57.4, $112K) and Gracie Cullen (1.55.6, $103K).
The colt’s granddam is a half-sister to Little Brown Jug winner and supersire Fake Left.
The second colt (Lot 163) is out of another outstanding broodmare, Little Fib. She has produced six winners, including Lettucefib (1.51.4, $190K) and Veracity Red (1.56, $168K).
The colt’s second dam is broodmare gem Nickel Castle, dam of 2YO Australia Gold and 2YO Breeders Crown winner Keppel Bay (1.58.3, $416K), 2YO VicBred final winner Blatant Lie (1.54.6, $410K) and 2YO Australian Gold winner Nickel Bay (1.55, $399K).
Kilmore horsewoman Monique Burnett is preparing the youngsters for the sale. She said they were nice types.
“They are good bodied, have good conformation and a strong work ethic,” she said. “They are not the tallest yearlings but they have real get-up-and-go and should be ready made two-year-olds.”
Burnett, who has done yearling preparation for the last 14 years, is prepping 32 yearlings for the sale.
“It is all go at the moment. It is going to be a big day, we are just about every second lot,” she said.
