Good news travels fast!
So, it was no surprise when news came out that our champion sire Bettor’s Delight (Cam’s Card Shark) is set to return to New Zealand on a one-way ticket this August, it quickly made headlines across the harness racing industry – almost faster than the speed that some of his progeny can run a mile, and that is fast!
Woodlands Stud are delighted to confirm this announcement to our breeders and to industry participants across the world. Bettor’s Delight will have a home for life at our Auckland based farm.
“We couldn’t be happier to confirm this news. Ultimately, he is 25 going on 26 and it came down to the welfare of the horse and doing what is best for him,” said Woodlands Stud Co-Director and veterinarian Andrew Grierson.
“We thank Tom Grossman and his shareholders for allowing this to happen. His progeny are still very successful in North America, so it was not an easy decision for them to make.”
Bettor’s Delight was the Leading All Age Sire in America, Canada, New Zealand and Australia for 2023 and remains on top in all four countries in the early stages of 2024.
Multiple factors have been taken into consideration when making the decision, but in the end, it came down to giving him the best chance to live a long and healthy life in mild temperatures with a lighter workload.
“We have a temperate climate in Auckland all year round. He always settles straight in and seems to enjoy his time in New Zealand, so we are hopeful that he will be very happy to remain here,” said Grierson.
Bettor’s Delight is a game-changing sire across the world. Even in the twilight of his career he continues to leave champion progeny, break records and top yearling sales. And he is far from done yet.
His service fees for 2024-25 will be $25,000 + GST in New Zealand and $27,500 inc GST in Australia with some discounts applying – the HRA stallion levy is additional for Australian mares.
