Sweet victory for a super filly in Gold Tiara Final

Racegoers witnessed the emergence of a rising superstar when Bittersweet (Captaintreacherous) scored a dominant harness racing win in the Group 1 $150,000 Gold Tiara Final at Bathurst.

Unbeaten in three starts heading into the final, Bittersweet was sent out a prohibitive $1.06 favorite from her inside alley and never gave her supporters an anxious moment.

Bittersweet cruised through the first half of the last mile in 58.5 before trainer/driver Brad Hewitt released the reins approaching the home turn and the daughter of Captaintreacherous exploded away from her rivals.

With Hewitt merely giving the reins a gentle flick, Bittersweet increased the margin in the home straight trouncing the opposition by 22 metres on the line in a mile rate of 1:54.4.

Bittersweet annihilated her rivals by 40 metres in her heat earlier in the week.

Hewitt said Bittersweet keeps raising the bar in her races.

“Each time she steps out she goes to another level which she has done from the heat to tonight,” Hewitt said.

“She is a big strong filly who looks more like a three-year-old,” he said.

Bittersweet is now unbeaten in four starts and has banked more than $120,000 in stake earnings.

When looking at the daughter of Captaintreacherous’ maternal line, it’s not hard to see why she has the pacing world at her feet as a juvenile. Both her grand-dam and great grand-dam were NZ 2YO Filly of the year!

Bittersweet is the second foal out of Gotta Go Jazzy Jet (Jeremes Jet), a 12 win race mare who in turn is out of the G1 winning Christian Cullen mare, Gotta Go Harmony.

Her dam? The incomparable Elect To Live (Live Or Die), the first filly to win pacer of the year in both New Zealand and Australia in the same season. It’s been an incredible fillies line for over two decades and Bernie Hewitt looks to have one who will only further embellish that legacy.
