In our weekly Clearing Maidens article we look through those breaking through for their first victories.
It could be a long-time maiden who has finally mastered race rivals or a progressive star of the track in the future – they all got one thing in common now – theyāre race winners!
Banks Peninsula 1st AprilĀ
Pasternak (Volstead – Lara Lass) Pasternak, hot off a third at Banks Peninsula on the 17th of March, bettered that performance with a strong win in the first of the day at Banks Peninsula on Monday the 1st of April. With the Robert and Jenna Dunn trio of runners dictating terms throughout the run it was left for the Diamond Racing charges to fight things out over the concluding stages, Parternak denying the fast-finishing Bravehearthighlander late to secure the maiden win. Pasternak comes from a celebrated trotting breed with dam Lara LassĀ (Sundon)Ā being a full sister to Stardon, mother to both Sundees Son (Majestic Son) and Sunnys SisterĀ (Majestic Son)Ā Itās a quality family of squaregaiters that keeps producing the wins at regular intervals.
Midnight Babe (Bettorās Delight – Beaudiene Bad Babe) One of the better bred maiden winners of the week, Midnight Babe made it 1/1 when winning the 2nd of the day when on debut. Some improving recent workout and trial efforts meant the money went on the Bamford runner – and she duly delivered late for her trainer / driver.
Midnight Babe is out of the open-class mare in Beaudiene Bad Babe, a mare that counts victories in the Gr1 4YO Diamond of 2010 and Caduceus Club Of Southland 2YO Fillies Classic of 2008 among her racing highlights – sheās also proven a great producer with the 15-time winner Bad To The Bone (Bettorās Delight) being her best performed son. With strong results from the damline in recent decades Midnight Babe could well turn into a valuable broodmare herself.
Midnight Babe scores with a flying last furlong at Banks Peninsula.Ā Ā
Shine All Over Me (Sunshine Beach – Carania) With mid-race moves and a wide draw Shine All Over Me certainly proved her worth, winning the third of the day in a close finish from a strongly backed Partners In Wine. A mid-race move to the front of the race followed by a trailing position meant the 5yr-old mare was in just the right spot to claim her maiden win after a sound debut effort on the grass last month. Dam Carania won 1 from 7 career starts with Terry (Terror To Love) being her best performing foal to date.
Timaru 3rd AprilĀ
Dasher (Bacardi Lindy – Vivian Leigh) Dashing to a maiden victory at start #4. The Murray Howard trained runner brought the manners at Phar Lap and prospered after showing good speed to lead the field around in the first of the day – the late efforts of Imperial Command and Kamilla being held off in the fighting finish to the 2050m mobile event. Ā Dasher had previously placed 4thĀ in behind Florence The Machine at Addington. Dam Vivian Leigh was unraced but has proven herself a more than capable mother, among her progeny the impressive 9-time winner in Benchmark (Bacardi Lindy) and the 6-time victor in Bobby Breen (Pegasus Spur)
Kalatra (Bettorās DelightĀ – Kashana) Bettorās Delight leaves another winner and this time it seemed effortless. Kalatra controlled the 2ndĀ of the day at Timaru, finding too many guns for race rivals over the concluding stages to win going away, taking out the 2600m mobile event by some 1 1/2 lengths. As far as breeding goes Kalatra has plenty, her mother won 3 times while also leaving a winning full-brother to Kalatra in Kalasa (2 wins) The wider family is well-known – Grandam Tory Franco left Sir Artsplace (Artsplace) a winner of 21 races, and the impressive Luksam (Christian Cullen)
Kalatra is from a strong damline with a winning habit.Ā Ā
Cutie (Bettorās Delight – Jakira) The Keast stable brought up another winner with this daughter of Bettorās Delight when she found enough over the concluding stages to take out the third on the card. Headed off by some well-mannered types early, Cutie found herself buried away on the pegs but the clear air came her way in time and she mastered Scarlett Madam late in the run to score at odds of 11/1. Cutie is the foal out of Jakira (Somebeachsomewhere) a 4-time winner.
Invercargill 4th AprilĀ
Dignify (Father Patrick – Bree) A maiden win at start #15, Dignify, racing as the favourite, proved that to be sound judgement with an emphatic 9 length victory in the first of the day at Ascot Park. Ā The Black trained runner was left well in front due to initial breaks from a number of race rivals. The result never really in doubt throughout the running. Dam Bree is a known performer when it comes to leaving winners, her first foal, Thatās The Story (Monarchy) won 7 while sheās also left the 7-time winner in Get Lucky (Lucky Chucky)
Haley Jaccka (Always B MIki – Erin Jaccka) Another favourite on the Invercargill card that proved too good for race rivals. Haley Jaccka, sent out at short odds, fought off a late bid from Artmore in the run to the line to take out the 1700m mobile event in 2.07.1 – an impressive debut win. In terms of breeding Haley Jaccka is the first foal out of the 4-time winner in Erin Jaccka (Empresso Jaccka) A full brother, Jaccka Henry, may well be the next we see out of the dam.
Erza The Scribe (Franco Ledger – Hennessy Franco) overcoming a second-row draw, Erza The Scribe got under the guard of punters, saluting in the 4th in the day at good odds of 10/1. Ā Sarah OāReilly drove the Hoffman trained runner well, making a mid-race move to be outside the speed with a lap to go – from there Erza The Scribe lifted well in the run home, beating out race leader Asta by a little over a length. It was the first placing of a 4-start career- although two of those finished in close-up 4ths.
Erza The Scribe finds enough to score a tough maiden victory.Ā
Cambridge 4thĀ April
Dragonstone (Father Patrick– Daenerys Targaryen) A little bit of Game Of Thrones came to Cambridge on the 4th with this winged victor appearing and winning in race #1, the Arna Donnelly trained runner impressing, taking out her maiden win at race day start #2. Ā Dragonstone shrugged off the unruly starting position, chasing hard early to bridge early gaps in the field, from there Todd Mitchell launched the daughter of Father Patrick 3 wide with some 600m to go – it proved a winning move with a short head victory achieved over Kaipaki Jack.
Bred by Breckon Farms Dragonstone is out of the fantastic performer in Daenerys Targaryen, a Gr1 winner with the Redwood Classic of 2013 to her name – her class siblings include the likes of Springbank Sam (Sundon) Pocaro (Sundon) Arnold (Muscle Mass) and Sun Of Anarchy (Sundon)
Dragonstone is too strong for race rivals at CambridgeĀ
Bobby Boy (Sir Lincoln – Joanednobettor) Another maiden winner with some strong bloodlines for the week. This John Dickie trained runner prevailed by the shortest of margins in the 2nd on the card at Cambridge. Sent out favourite, Bobby Boy had to tussle with the Green trained Lincoln Cove for the spoils – it was the first win in a 10-start career, although, it has to be said, that Bobby Boy appears a much more tractable horse as a 4yr-old with two second placings in his last 2 race day appearances prior to this victory. Dam Joanednobettor was an impressive sort, winning some 7 races from 48 starts – as a mother Joanednobettor is a now a winning broodmare – Bobby Boy being her first winner from two foals.
Billy The Kid (Bettorās Delight -First Western) Running like an outlaw in the last of the night at Cambridge, Billy The Kid brought up his first victory at career appearance #6. Sent out race favourite, Billy The Kid and Sailesh Abernethy had to work hard early to obtain a mid-race lead, a lead theyād keep for the remainder of the 2200m mobile trip, winning by a little under 1/2 a length from the Ray Green trained Frisco Bay. Ā Billy The Kid is out of First Western, a daughter of the brilliant Kateās First, making this just another of the great damlines to make a winning impact over the last week or so.
Addington (Cheviot) 7th AprilĀ
Delās Creation (Creatine- Delcola) Seemingly enjoying the trip up from Matarua, Delās Creation scored an impressive victory in the first of the day at Addington on Sunday. Good manners and a willingness to press forward meant the B Orange driven 5yr-old mare was near the speed throughout, using the passing lane to score by some 3 lengths – the victory coming up at race start #9. Delās Creation continues the great returns out of broodmare Delcola with Splash Cola, a 13-time winner by Sundon, Delson a 9-time winner, and the current performer in Andy Hall, all out of the mare.
Piccadilly Pete (Sweet LouĀ – Piccadilly Princess) Punters labeled this Dalgety trained runner unbeatable in the 2nd of the day and so it proved with Carter Dalgety and the son of Sweet Lou showing good gate-speed to lead the maiden field – from there it all seemed a little too easy for the impressive 3yr-old. The effortless 2-length win coming up in 2.28.7 over the 1980m mobile trip. Piccadilly Pete is likely to have more wins in him given his royal blood – Dam Piccadilly Princess won the Ladyship Mile at Gr1 level in 2017 along with being a Victoria Oaks victor, a racing career of highlights thatās now being added to in the broodmare paddock with Piccadilly Pete being her first foal and winner on the track.
Got The Chocolates (Art Major – Kate Black) Beaten by Rubira on debut, Got The Chocolates got the chocolates in race day start #2 in the 3rd of the day at Addington. The 2yr-old proved too strong for a limited field of race rivals fending off both Bettor Anvil and Party Central in the run to the line- the nature of the front running effort impressive to view. Got The Chocolates in the first winner out of Kate Black, a daughter of the great Kateās First. Itās a class family thatās just added another winner into the history books.
Millwood Goddess (Rock N Roll Heaven – Millwood Meg) A fitting victory. Millwood Goddess, who had always looked capable of winning a race, found the late sprint to win her maiden victory at race day start #18. After finding the front early Millwood Goddess and Blair Orange played the patience game until the top of the straight, pulling out and then back to the inner of the track for a late dive at the winning post – the winning margin just over 1/2 a length from the Jamie Gameson trained Remission.
Millwood Goddess is out of the impressive Millwood Meg, a WA Oaks and Queensland Oaks winner of 2010 – as a mother Millwood Meg has a 100% strike-rate with the impressive Millwood Daisy (Art Major) and Millwood Bonnie (Bettorās Delight) both out of the mare.
Forever Dream (DownbytheseasideĀ – Walk Of Fame) Picking up the feature on the card in the 7th of the day at Addington, Forever Dream became the Leonard Memorial winner at start #2. Beaten by General Jen on debut Forever Dream took an early lead, finding the trail around a lap out from home when General Jen took up the pace, a fighting passing lane bid was enough to hold out the stoic Spicey Crunch in the shadows of the post.
Forever Dream is another name to add to the list of royally bred winners from this week – her dam Walk Of Fame won 4 herself with the damline able to be traced back to the mother of Tupelo Rose in Hollywood Rose (Butler BG)
