Welcome into our Speed in the breed article. A look into the successful families represented at the trials and workouts.
If you look into the sales catalogue or those that find fame out on the track in the features races youāre likely to find that many of the champions of today come from great families of the past. Here we touch on that habit of success- how the great families continue to leave the very best.
A full card of trials will take place at Rangiora on Tuesday the 29thĀ of May – thereās plenty of talking points behind those lining up – these include.
Call Dudley (Majestic SonĀ – Aspiring Monarch) Set to line up out of the Nairn barn in the 1st of the day, this son of Majestic Son calls upon plenty of breeding prowess. Dam Aspiring Monarch was unraced but grandam Aspiring Gal has truly stamped her mark on the NZ harness scene through her progeny, the most notable of those being the Gr 1 winning Royal Aspirations, a winner of the 2YO Ruby of 2012 when victorious over Sheemon and Paramount Queen, the trotting force also took out the NZ Yearling Sales Open Trot in the same year when beating out Quite A Moment.
Other performers out of Aspiring Gal include the star Jinja Gal (6 wins) and the 10-time winner in Triumphant Monarch (Monarchy)

Franco Sheriff (Vincent – Shieldmaiden) Another runner with some interesting bloodlines. This son of Vincent appears in heat 2 of the day and is well connected to same serious pacing power. The Zampese trained runner is out of race winner Shieldmaiden with the family really firing up through the exploits of grandam Alta Serena (Fake left), the winner of the Easter Cup of 2005 when scoring over a quality field including Sly Flyin, Likmesiah, and Bobs Blue Boy.
As a broodmare Alta Serena produced the stylish Hughie Green, an 18-time winner by Art Major.

The Highwayman (Fear The Dragon – Asajah) The Telfer stable line up two in heat 3 of the day with this son of Fear The Dragon appearing for the first time. Dam Asajah went winless from some 7 starts but has a tidy record as a broodmare producing Shenandoah (15 wins) as her first foal and Maharani (12 wins) as her second. Itāll be interesting to see if this 2yr-old can kick some goals for the sire Fear The Dragon in times to come.
Mister (Father Patrick – Prestine) Working his way around in a learners trot towards the end of the program is this Chris Butt trained runner. Dam Prestine was a handy mare, winning 5 of her 57 race day starts – thereās plenty of breeding further back too with Princess Mackendon (9 wins) and Sassy Pants (10 wins) being siblings to Prestine. Father Patrick has been flying as a sire for some time with Mister being just another poised to impress.
