Hanging Fire is on fire and set to continue

While one South Australian attempts to extend her winning harness racing streak interstate, another will seek to maintain his sequence locally this weekend.

Boasting eight consecutive wins, following a debut second, Miss Idaho (Ultimate Machete) faces a major step up in grade in Melton on Saturday night.

Along with battling the ‘boys’, Miss Idaho has drawn horrifically along the second row for trainer Ryan Hryhorec.

As such, markets have the daughter of Ultimate Machete among the outsiders at $21.

Closer to home, Hanging Fire (Alta Christiano) will return to Globe Derby chasing his sixth successive victory for astute horseman Mario Borg.

Triumphant during his final outing for respected trainer Greg Scholefield, Hanging Fire was a luckless sixth upon debut for before beginning his dominance for Borg.

“He has been a super buy for Frank (Pullicino),” Borg said. “He had no luck in his first start for us, which was in the Port Pirie Cup, but hasn’t set a hoof out of place since.

“His work has been super and he’s been taking that to the races, so what more could you ask?

“He’s still got to get out there and step up again on Saturday night, but I can’t see any reason why he won’t.”

To be driven by Gaita Pullicino, Hanging Fire is a $1.20 favourite despite drawing the widest of six runners.

Borg will also be represented by Ideal Dan and Harry Ovens, with the latter considered the main threat to his stablemate.

Ideal Dan will begin from gate three, with Harry Ovens drawn five.

“Those two are both models of consistency and are bursting to break through for another win,” Borg said. “Take Harry for example, he’s run six placings and a fourth at his last seven starts, with most of those behind Hanging Fire.

“Whether he can turn the tables remains to be seen, but if Hanging Fire isn’t at his top on the night, Harry will be ready to take advantage.”
