The eliminations for the Moore’s Mile Breeders’ Stake for three-year-old colts and geldings both ended in harness racing upsets on Saturday (Jun. 8) at Century Downs.
A disqualification in the first split led to a $17 win payoff. Rum N Custard (Custard The Dragon, Kelly Hoerdt) was first to the front but let odds-on favourite Grey Horizon (Brandon Campbell) by just past the quarter-mile marker.
The latter led around the final turn, building his lead to three-lengths, but Rum N Custard crucially closed to within three-quarters-of-a-length as Grey Horizon crossed the line first in 1:54.3. After Grey Horizon got his picture taken, the judges determined he went inside two consecutive pylons on the final turn and placed him behind Rum N Custard, who was lapped-on at the wire.
Come On Santana (Jamie Gray) took show with five lengths separating him and fourth-place finisher Nevada Dragon (Nathan Sobey).
RUM N CUSTARD REPLAY
Rum N Custard, who debuted this season at three, is now two-for-six with $19,990 in earnings for trainer Hoerdt. He was fourth in last week’s Alberta Sires Stakes Marksman Final and second in his elimination for that race. Hoerdt co-owns the gelding with Fred Gilbert of Brandon.
Yyc On The Horizon (Vertical Horizon, Gray) took flight down the stretch in the second elimination, closing from fourth to first to score at 16-1 in 1:56.2. Matteuse (Sobey) edged out favourite Hot One Minute (Campbell) for second. Tzilacatzin (Chris Brown) took fourth.
YYC ON THE HORIZON REPLAY
It was a maiden-breaking win for Yyc On The Horizon and his first career top-three finish in five tries. Gray trains the gelding and co-owns him with Wild Dunes Stables.
The $90,000 guaranteed final of the Moore’s Mile Breeders’ stake is set for Saturday, Jun. 15, which will be the next card at Century Downs. Racing will begin at 12:45 p.m. EDT.
