Former Ontario stallion and O’Brien Award-winning harness racing pacer Jimmy Freight (Sportswriter) will be standing stud in a new jurisdiction.

Arriving at Faith Valley Ranch last week, Jimmy Freight will stand stud in Alberta.

During his racing career, Jimmy Freight earned more than $1.9 million and took his lifetime mark of 1:48s at age seven winning the $100,000 Mohawk Gold Cup, a race he won twice — in 2019 and 2022. The nine-year-old pacer stands as the richest and co-fastest son of Sportswriter and is out of the Western Ideal mare, Allamerican Summer.

At age two and three, Jimmy Freight was a multiple Ontario Sires Stakes Gold division winner and he won the $225,000 OSS Super Final at age three when he also took a division of the Somebeachsomewhere Stakes. He went five-for-five in the OSS as a sophomore and took home the O’Brien Award as Canada’s Three-Year-Old Pacing Colt of the Year.

In addition to his two Mohawk Gold Cup titles, Jimmy Freight won the 2019 Dayton Pacing Derby and 2022 Camluck Classic during his aged campaign. From 85 lifetime starts, he finished his racing career with a record reading 37-18-14.

Jimmy Freight’s first crop of foals raced in 2023. From 24 foals, he had 15 starters with two earning more than $100,000, including Resilience p,3, 1:50.2s ($167,736), an OSS Gold winner and the $100,000 Jimmy Freight Stakes winner.

“We were so honoured that Adriano Sorella allowed us to purchase this very talented boy and add one more incredible stallion to Alberta’s breeding industry,” said a statement from the farm located in Rocky Mountain House, Alta. “We cannot wait to see what the future holds for Alberta when his foals start hitting the ground.”
