A big crowd attended closing night at Kawartha Downs on Friday (Sep. 13) as the track concluded its 2024 season with Customer Appreciation Night.
The featured event was a charity Weiner Dog derby benefiting the Peterborough Humane Society. Mabel, number six, came flying to take the first elimination and returned to win the final. Hudson, the second elimination winner, gave Mabel a tight race in the showdown.
Samuel Fillion repeated as the trackās top driver, topping the standings with 44 wins. The 26-year-old Quebec native has already set career records in wins and earnings this season. Tom Riley three-peated as the leading trainer, amassing 31 wins this season. He was 22 wins clear of second-placed Kyle Fellows. Riley is on pace for a lifetime best season in wins.
Fillion and Riley teamed up to win the second race on the card with Shadrack Hanover (Muscle Hill). The seven-year-old stallion wired the field in convincing fashion, winning for the 25th time in his career by four lengths in 1:55.4.
