As of today 24% of the $25,000 hay match has been met. That leaves $19,000 still needed to get the 288 horses the hay they need.
There are 480 former harness racing horses under the expense and care of the Standardbred Retirement Foundation, (SRF). The current weather situation in many states has impacted SRF’S ability to get them all fed. They need hay now.
SRF is reaching out to everyone to send help. Every dollar donated to purchase hay will be matched up to $25,000.
Budgeting for an unexpected fluctuation in weather is considered annually, especially since climate change has been causing SRF issues with feeding the herd, but not at the level this is. The fields have been brown and remain brittle at some locations, the hay stored to provide for them is nearly exhausted. Initially, SRF horses in Kentucky were the greatest concern, however, other locations are experiencing similar feeding issues. SRF has horses in eleven states.
SRF must meet this match very quickly, by October 2, 2024 due to the need to feed them. Please, your immediate support is a critical need right now.
