Murphy’s pacing bred mare makes trotting look easy

David Murphy has pacing bred squaregaiter Perfidious Sue (Captaintreacherous) firing of late with back-to-back harness racing wins at Maryborough and Melton ahead of Saturday nightā€™s APG four and five-year-old Trot at Headquarters.

The five-year-old bred by high quality pacing stallion, Captaintreacherous has found her groove as a squaregaiter.

ā€œShe is pacing bred and it is a bit of a chore switching them over,ā€ Murphy said.

ā€œShe has been to a few different trainers before us and we established that she could trot a bit and might have been better as a trotter ā€“ it started off a bit rocky, because we had to get the pace out of her.

ā€œShe is by Captaintreacherous which is quite a fiery stallion and her mum (Valiant Sue) is also fiery as well, she took a while to hit her straps and get trotting.

ā€œShe won a good race at Melton and went a little bit off the boil, but she has turned things around lately and her form has been good the last couple of runs or so.ā€

The mare has continued to find comfort in trotting according to the Dunnstown horseman.

ā€œShe was with probably three or four trainers before us and she always hung really bad and the reason she hung was probably because she wanted to trot,ā€ he said.

ā€œShe is fairly fiery, but as far as her gait goes, she is a beautifully gaited trotter.

ā€œIt was about her mindset and getting her calm to stay in gait.ā€

Saturday nightā€™s $15,000 event will give the 54-year-old a deeper understanding of the path forward for the winner of over $62,000.

ā€œWe will learn a lot because we have Shes Ruby Roo in the race and a lot of other good contenders,ā€ he said.

ā€œWe get to find out where we fit in on Saturday night. I have got no doubt that with the times and sectionals she runs ā€“ she is up there with any of the really good horses.

ā€œShe is in good order at the moment and is in a good spot and we (have) sorted out the issues that might have caused a bit of a form slump.ā€

Perfidious Sue has drawn five for Saturday nightā€™s 2240m event which is idyllic according to her trainer-driver.

ā€œThe draw is ideal for her. We will go forward and she is getting better and better out of the mobile all the time, ā€œMurphy said.

The Stephen Clarke-prepared Suga Daddy has drawn one with Group 1 winner Shes Ruby Roo drawing seven for Jess Tubbs.

The APG four and five-year-old Trot is set to go at 9.03pm.
