General Custard (Custard The Dragon) rose to the Preferred level on Saturday (Dec. 21) at Century Mile and secured his first harness racing victory since August.
He outmuscled rivals at the rail to take control in a :28.2 first split for Dave Kelly. Mercedes (Jean-Francois Gagne) was first off the cones from fourth before the half in :57 and pulled alongside the leader as the field raced through three-quarters in 1:26.1.
General Custard went into sprint mode at the top of the stretch with several rivals threatening. Mercedes and Matts A Mystician surged in the final meters, but General Custard held them off to prevail by a half-length in 1:54.
Mercedes finished second over Matts A Mystician. The winner returned $13.50.
GENERAL CUSTARD REPLAY
The win was the 10th lifetime for General Custard, who has earned $168,579 in 55 starts. He had been out of the win column since the transition to Edmonton at the end of the Century Mile meet but was a strong second last week. Kelly trains the four-year-old for Pick 6 Stable of Strathmore.
Leading trainer Travis Ellis bagged another three wins on the card, including his fifth in seven starts with Trust Me A Lot (Trust The Artist) since the filly entered his barn in October.
Drivers Nathan Sobey and Kelly Hoerdt both tripled.
The next card at Century Mile is scheduled for New Yearās Eve.
