Western Fair cancels after accident

The Raceway at the Western Fair District cancelled the remainder of its Monday (Jan. 13) harness racing card due to unsafe track conditions after an accident in race four.

Leader Drew The Dragon, driven by Austin Sorrie, took steps and fell coming off the first turn. The entire field took evasive action, but Drew The Dragon’s sulky was hit by pocket-sitter Machalko, and driver Paul Mackenzie fell after holding onto the seat for about a 1/16th of a mile. Sports Section, while attempting to avoid the incident from the three-hole, was rear-ended, and Jason Ryan also fell. Ryan was then rolled over by the sulky of Garretts Guide, causing Daryl Thiessen to be unseated. All other horses evaded the accident. The race was declared a no contest.

Track announcer Sugar Doyle said on the broadcast that all horses and drivers were on their feet after the accident and that Jason Ryan was attended to by paramedics.

Treasured Tee (Yankee Glide, Samuel Fillion) won the night’s Preferred Trot in a six-length romp in 1:59.1. The 10-year-old went wire-to-wire for trainer Francis Guillemette, who co-owns him with Stephane Geoffroy. It was the gelding’s 35th career victory in 180 starts.
