To borrow a phrase from the late, great announcer Larry Lederman, if the harness racing qualifying dash featuring trotter Quebec Hanover on Friday, March 14 at Woodbine Mohawk Park was a fight, they’d have stopped it.
With a number of the familiar faces in the Preferred Trot ranks sliding into the New Holland Trotting Series, five-year-old Quebec Hanover — whose earnings just eclipsed the series’ $150,000 threshold in 2024 — has been left without his usual dance partners. Thus, the connections placed the son of Walner – Queen Of Grace into the Friday session of qualifiers at Mohawk for a sharpening mile.
Sharpening achieved.
With driver Louis-Philippe Roy at the controls, Quebec Hanover said au revoir to his fellow entrants early by opening up a nine-length cushion at the :27.3 opening quarter. Roy ratcheted back the speed through the middle half through panels of :58.4 and and 1:28.1 before scooting home in :27.3 to trip the timer in a brisk 1:55.4. Next across the wire, 26 lengths in arrears, was Manhattan Moni and driver James MacDonald.
Owned by trainer Ben Baillargeon along with Claude Hamel of Orford, Que., Santo Vena of Cedar Valley, Ont. and Nunzio Vena of Bolton, Ont., Quebec Hanover sports a 13-10-3 summary from 58 career starts with $238,829 in earnings.
