Catch A Wave too classy at Geelong

Top line pacer Catch A Wave (Captain Treacherous) had to draw upon his superior class when he narrowly won the Hoyts Food Geelong Rocket on Friday night.

Fresh from an unsuccessful tilt at the Miracle Mile Catch A Wave was expected to return to winning form but he faced a number of formidable opponents.

  Kate Gath on  Catch A Wave was in no hurry when the field was dispatched and he was eased back to the rear of the field with veteran pacer Triple Eight behind him.

Rocknroll Hammer and Yambukian had a spirited battle for the early lead with Rocknroll Hammer fending off the challenge forcing Yambukian to race outside the leader. Jilliby Nitro had the one out and one back trail with Catch A Wave right behind him.

Rocknroll Hammer skipped away on the final bend as Catch A Wave was unleashing his run out three wide. Even with a  26.7 seconds final quarter Catch A Wave showed his class in downing a gallant Rocknroll Hammer by a neck with Yambukian 5 metres away third.

In winning Catch A Wave equalled Honalua Bay’s track record of 1.51.9.

With stake earnings in excess of $2.14 million, Catch A Wave is now set to go over to Western Australia to defend his Nullabor title which he won last year and which is worth $1.25 million this year. He may also stay on for the Freemantle Cup a week later which he also won last year. Despite being trained in Victoria Catch A Wave seems to show his best form interstate so he looks a strong contender when he goes to Perth.

Rocknroll Hammer who was perfectly driven by James Herbertson is probably racing in the best form of his career and he nearly stole the race with a daring front running drive.
