Major Hipster (Art Major) who’s been with Woodend Beach harness racing trainer Matt Purvis for just six starts, achieved his second win for his new stable at the Banks Peninsula meeting today at Addington.
Driver Seth Hill with a peach of a drive controlled the front and the four year old, too classy for the field, won by two and a half lengths from Quicker Than Quick. It was Major Hipster’s fifth win.
“That’s the key to those 2000 metre stands. If you ping like that it becomes so much harder for the other ones. The drive was an absolute pearler. Benny did all the early work with him, he came to me at the start of March. He always got on an outside knee and coming to the beach has been a godsend for him. Working in a straight line he’s not touching it and he’s getting his confidence back which is good to see,” Purvis said.
MAJOR HIPSTER REPLAY

And his new trainer thinks the winning hasn’t stopped.
“He’ll get better in the next six months. He was always lightly raced. He was a bit green and a bit insecure and he’s starting to get his confidence up. Benny and his team did a lovely job with him.”
Purvis has eighteen horses in work at the moment and is in the rebuild phase.
“I’ve got a lot of yearlings and two year olds so we’ve got a smaller race team. There’s one I don’t mind who’s just gone out for his third prep. He’s by Fear The Dragon out of Dancing In The Dark.
Purvis says the yearling is of his father’s breed and is hopeful he’ll be a nice early two year old next season.
