Beluga wins for Sloany

Over the years retired builder Alan Sloan and his wife Liz have pumped a bit of money into the harness racing industry, buying yearlings at the sales.

Their 2023 purchased Beluga (Bettor’s Delight) lived up to his breeding today at the Riverton Trotting Club meeting when he won the Night ‘N Day Winton/Transport Services Mobile Pace.

BELUGA REPLAY

The $70,000 purchase was taken straight to the lead by his trainer driver Craig Ferguson, going on to win by a neck.

“We gave him a couple of trials as a colt and he galloped in his qualifying trial. He was more interested in everything else that was going on than what he was supposed to be doing. We gelded him and he’s come back a lot more on the job,” Ferguson said.

The three year old who’s a half brother to Ruby Roe, was made favourite on the back of three good fourths in his first three starts.

“The racing’s been good for him and he’s got better each time. He was probably unlucky not to have won his very first start. He got attacked in his last start but every run he’s had has brought him on, so it hasn’t been all bad.”

Beluga will now have a spell and come back for spring racing.

“Its all there. He’s quite an immature horse and has taken a bit to learn what the game’s about. When he fills out and comes back, he’ll start to put it all together. He’s a typical Bettor’s Delight that goes better when he goes off the place.”

The win was a welcome return to the winner’s circle for the Sloans whose last winner was Louie (Christian Cullen – Chloe Hanover) at Ascot Park in April 2017.
