The Telfer harness racing team continued their winning ways, taking out two races at the Timaru meeting yesterday and making it 10 wins in four days for Stonewall Stud.

Bar Louie and winning connections

Cheer The Captain (Captaintreacherous) in Race 1, the Brosnan Transport Passing Lane was too good with driver Tim Williams. In what was a procession, Cheer The Captain was able to find the lead quickly and cruised to victory, never leaving second gear, to score by a neck from a very nice runner up in Rena. The closing 800 was in 57.5 seconds, the final 400 in 27.6 seconds.

“It was a super front running drive,” said Stonewall Stud on their Facebook group.

That was the Captaintreacherous gelding’s second win from just three starts.

“There’s a lot of breeding around him,” said co-trainer Amanda Telfer.

“We have a big opinion of him.”

Cheer The Captain is out of Bettors Delight mare Cheer The Lady who won 11 races from 35 starts for trainer Barry Purdon and Scott Phelan.

Bar Louie’s win in the Temuka Transport LTD Timaru Winter Cup was nothing short of impressive. The three-year-old Sweet Lou gelding was fresh up since last racing in December, all while having his first standing start under race conditions, while taking on older and much more experienced horses.

“He was too strong …. it was another super drive by Tim,” commented Stonewall Stud.

Bar Louie stepped well enough into a pace with a patient Tim Williams letting him find his feet early in what was a solid tempo. Williams then pounced onto the lead with a lap to go where Bar Louie remained, full of running to the quarter. Bar Louie was never in doubt, shooting away to an emphatic four length victory to win, beating the ever so consistent Woodbine Rocks.

BAR LOUIE REPLAY

According to Telfer there will be more in store. So watch this space.

“He’s really settled in well since arriving. He still has some strengthening up and mental maturing to do.”

Mythical, the Telfer’s only other runner on the programme finished a close second in what was a big improvement on her recent form.

The Telfers’  10 winners (with drivers) were :

Lewey Maguire / Frank Phelan (Cambridge)

C C Arden / Tim Williams (Addington)

Elektra King / Tim Williams (Addington)

Allamericanplayer (G1) / Tim Williams (Addington)

Music Mistress / Tim Williams (Addington)

Akatea / Tim Williams (Addington)

Sweet Maggie Mae / Josh Dickie (Auckland)

Beachbreak / Andre Poutama (Auckland)

Cheer The Captain / Tim Williams (TImaru)

Bar Louie / Tim Williams (Timaru)

The Telfers now have 58 wins in 2025 to be 11 behind leader Michael House (69 wins).

Other highlights on the programme yesterday included a training double for Andrew Stuart (Super Fund and Social Distancing) while drivers Robbie Close (Beverley Courtney and Super Fund) and Blair Orange (Banksy and Social Distancing ) picked up doubles.
