The Steve and Amanda Telfer trained Bar Louie (Sweet Lou) showed he was enjoying racing in the south when he won the Rural Business Accountants Three Year Old Champion Stakes at Ashburton today.
Driver Tim Williams settled Bar Louie back in the outside running line before forging to the front with 900 metres to run. He went down to the line to win easily by three lengths from Renaldo.
“He won nice last week at Timaru fresh up and we were quite happy with him. And he’d trained on well. When the driver works with him he knows how to drive him. Tim said he got on the bit so he decided to make a move and when he went he realised he was going to get them all so he just kept going. It was a good positive drive,” Amanda said.
BAR LOUIE REPLAY
The winning time for the 1700 metres was 1-58.8 – a mile rate of 1-52.4.

The win was Bar Louie’s fifth in ten starts.

“He was a nice horse early on, winning his first two. He just got a bit lost going the Auckland way round but now he’s matured in the body, got a bit stronger and turned into a nice horse. He just needs a little bit of racing and ringcraft for the end of the season. There’s a three year old race in two weeks times.”

The colt is out of In The Pocket mare Motu Haughty Helen. Her pedigree extends back to Speedy Guest whose wins included the Ashburton Cup, New Zealand Messenger and Great Northern Derby.
