The 60th running of the Kurow Cup will be raced at Oamaru on the 17th August.

Despite it’s name, the race has been held at Kurow just twice. It ran there in the first two years of it’s inception – 1965 and 1966 and has been run at Oamaru ever since.

In the early years Ted Lowe carved out a very good record in the feature, owning the winners Leldon (1972), Ariemore (1981), Portfolio (1982) and Samson (1985).

Ashburton trainer John Morrison has won two of the last three Kurow Cups with Harrison and Jimmyray.

Recent Ashburton qualifier Mighty Flying Miki (Always B Miki) is the last foal out of broodmare gem Fleet’s Pocket.

She’s left eighteen foals, seventeen of which have qualified. Sixteen have collectively won 144 races.

Biggest winners for Fleet’s Pocket have been Mighty Flying Art (27), Mighty Flying Thomas (24) and Mighty Flying Deal (21).

Also qualifying at Ashburton on Tuesday was the Micheal Heenan trained Morrie Afton (Superfast Stuart).

Morrie Afton is out of Bryon Afton, an unraced Sundon mare out of Lady Afton.

Lady Afton’s first foal Frances Jay Bee, won six races and is the dam of One Kenny (19), One Under Kenny (11) and One Over Kenny (32).

Lady Afton also left Raymauwarrhen Sun (22).

This spring One Over Da Moon will serve mares naturally in Central Otago.

The Majestic Son stallion which won twenty two races, has moved from Wai Eyre Farm to Rusty Nevil’s property at Poolburn.

From limited opportunities, One Over Da Moon has left the winners of fifty two races including the very promising To The Moon And Back which won the Gold Chip Final at Ascot Park last Sunday.
