Grand veteran Nephew of Sonoko (Danny Bouchea) caused a shock when he outsprinted his harness racing rivals to take out the Haras Des Trotteurs Trot at Melton on Saturday evening.

The nine year old was unfancied in the betting despite being steered by inform driver James Herbertson.

Gotfeelingsyouknow had looked very impressive winning at Melton last week and was installed a warm favourite ahead of Aldebaran Vera who has been knocking on the door.

Mega Spur showed fast early speed to head off More Wanted who elected to take a trail behind the leader.

Gotfeelingsyouknow was well back in the field one out and four back with Aldebaran Vera right behind looking for the final trail. In the meantime Nephew of Sonoko was ahead of those and looking comfortable in the run.

The race completely changed complexion when for no apparent reason Gotfeelingsyouknow broke up in the back straight on the final occasion thus losing all chance. This made the task of Aldebaran Vera more difficult as she was forced wider when making her run.

NEPHEW OF SONOKO JUL 26 REPLAY

More Wanted gained an inside run to grab the lead but Nephew of Sonoko came with a well timed burst to take the lead and then had to withstand Aldebaran Vera who made a late dive but was too late. Nephew Of Sonoko had a half a neck to spare over Aldebaran Vera with More Wanted in third.

Nephew of Sonoko has been a wonderful performer for his owners Leigh and Ross Graham from Sutton Grange. He’s won 21 of his 180 race appearances to date for just under $345,000 in stake money.

He’s raced continually since his two year old days and three years ago won an Inter Dominion Heat at Shepparton.

Driver James Herbertson was pleasantly surprised.

“I didn’t expect that but when things work out he’s got enough class he’s shown throughout his career he handles himself well in these type of races. We got a lot of luck. One favourite went to war early and the other galloped so from a luck perspective we had it all.”

“He’s earned a few cheques along the way when things work out his way. He relies on that little bit of luck. And he pops up every now and then. Ross will be over the moon. He’s had him since he was young. He means a lot to him. And he’s won an Inter Dominion heat with him.”

The win completed a double for Herbertson who had been previously successful with Diamond Eclipse (Pet Rock)
