The well-bred Clotilde Wainwright (Majestic Son) continued on her winning way when she won a trotting heat of the Diamond Creek/SBSR Southern Surge Series at the Central Southland Raceway at Winton today.

Trainer driver Nathan Williamson settled the four year old mare at seventh, early.

“She took it all in early and wasn’t rushed off her feet. She was pretty sensible through that early piece,” he said.

With 1700 metres to run he moved Clotilde Wainwright up to sit parked, leaving favourite Tarragindi posted three wide with a lap to run.

With 1200 metres to run Williamson took his runner to the top. In a race of changing fortunes Downtown Orlando was taken to the front but at the 500 Williamson took Clotilde Wainwright around to the front again and opened up a good buffer on the chasing bunch which was led by Tarragindi.

The margin closed up to a length and a quarter at the line with Clotilde Wainwright and Nathan Williamson beating his dad Phil on Tarragindi.

CLOTILDE WAINWRIGHT REPLAY

“She’s been improving steadily but is still pretty inexperienced. I’m happy with her progress and she’s a genuine wee filly. She’ll probably go round next week for some more practice and come again for the final.”

Clotilde Wainwright is out of Poppymalda which won eight of her twenty five starts. Her co-owner Ross Jones says Clotilde Wainwright is named after an old girlfriend, but I wasn’t sure whether to believe him.

Jones is well known for coming up with unusual names for horses like Bill Bootit and Bob Barrelit.

Meanwhile Phil Williamson was happy with Tarragindi’s run for second.

“Yeah, he ran a mighty race and will go through to the final. The good thing is that he’ll only start off ten metres and not off twenty if he’d won.”
