Veteran New York trainer James McNeight Sr. has been fined $5,000 and handed a two-year ban from harness racing in New York after using a hypodermic needle to inject a horse at Buffalo Raceway on May 1, 2025. The New York State Gaming Commission (NYSGC) immediately suspended McNeight’s racing privileges, citing public safety and equine welfare concerns.
Following a scheduled hearing, McNeight waived his rights and accepted a settlement agreement that included:
-
Revocation of his valid receipt and denial of his 2024 license application,
-
A ban from reapplying for a racing license until May 3, 2027,
-
Prohibition from entering racetracks, earning purse money, or handling horse care/training arrangements in New York during the ban period.
This decisive ruling underscores the NYSGC’s strict stance on maintaining integrity and safety in harness racing.
