Racing returns to Burnie after weather delay

Harness racing returns to Tasmania’s north-west coast, with the Burnie Harness Racing Club set to stage an eight-race card on Monday in the twilight zone.

The meeting was to be held on Friday, but was postponed until Monday due to the weather across the state.

Several clubs still contested the Tasmania Sporting Challenge on Friday, with nine local sporting clubs chasing a share of $4,500.

Dylan Ford has driven nine winners from 29 drives on the Burnie track over the past 12 months, three more wins than the next best driver on the Burnie track.

Ford has several chances to extend on that tally across the twilight program, rating Wazza in race four, a rating 55 to 60 mobile start event over 2180m, as one of his best chances on the program.

“He is Group 1 placed, and he is a horse that I think the tight track will suit him.

“He gets a nice trailing draw and I liked his win in Launceston last start,” said Ford.

Ashante Queen will have her first standing start try in the Thank You Ridgley Rascals – Relay For Life Pace (2180m), and she won a recent standing start trial in Hobart before running fifth last start.

“If she can ping to the top, I think she has a good chance.

“She will go away, I’m just not sure how quick she will be, but she will get around the track, which always helps at Burnie,” the driver said.
