Nathan Williamson making positive progress after serious fall

Harness racing driver Nathan Williamson is making encouraging progress in Auckland Hospital after suffering serious injuries in a fall at Alexandra Park on Friday night.

Williamson was driving Captains Mistress in the final stages of the race when the seat on his sulky collapsed, unseating him and sending him heavily to the track near the winning post. He was knocked unconscious in the incident and also sustained facial injuries.

Medical staff responded immediately on course before Williamson was transported by ambulance to Auckland Hospital, where he was placed into a coma as a precaution.

Nathan’s wife Katie, along with members of the wider Williamson family, have been by his side throughout the weekend. The Williamsons are one of New Zealand’s best-known harness racing families, with Phil and Bev, and brothers Matthew and Brad, all deeply involved in the sport.

In an update shared tonight through Nathan Williamson Racing, Katie expressed gratitude for the overwhelming support received since the accident, while also requesting privacy during the early stages of his recovery.

“Nathan is in the right place with a wonderful team of professionals and family by his side,” Katie said.

“We are pleased with his progress so far.”

She also extended heartfelt thanks to those who assisted immediately after the incident, including Hato Hone St John staff, medical personnel at Auckland Hospital, and members of the harness racing community at Alexandra Park who rushed to help.
